Now that you have received your iPad…

The Official Apple iPad User Guide is very useful for getting started. It is in your best interest to familiarise yourself with the basic operations by reading through the first few chapters.

Useful Apps

There are now over 140,000 apps designed specifically for the iPad. They’re available from the App Store in virtually every category, and more are added every day! Below is a list of recommended apps to improve your University iPad experience.
Filer Lite (Free).
This program allows most files found on the web to be downloaded and stored onto the iPad. This is a ‘must have’ app to ensure you get access to lecture recordings in MP3 (audio) and MP4 (audio and video) files that we create with each lecture.
Good Reader ($5.49).
Allows you to take control of your downloads (web or e-mail) and organises them into a file structure. A nice feature is the ability to record your e-mail attachments if it is set up to do so. It is also a good PDF reader that allows you to annotate PDF files.
Dropbox (Free).
Allows you to safely store documents on your iPad and it automatically synchronises files to cloud storage so that changes on one platform are automatically recorded on all other connecting platforms.
Google Drive (Free)
Keep all your stuff in one place and then access it from any device, anywhere through the web. Store documents, pictures, or other files - even the big ones - using Google Drive and easily share them with anyone.
Neu Annotate/PDF Note (Both Free).
These apps allow you to annotate PDF documents. They each have slightly differing functionality. Check them out.
AudioNote Lite (Free).
AudioNote combines the functionality of a notepad and voice recorder to create a powerful tool that will save you time while improving the quality of your notes!
N+otes (free)
Note-taking app that allows you to create, save and mail text and recorded notes.
Evernote (free)
Evernote lets you take notes, capture photos, create to-do lists, record voice reminders – and makes these notes completely searchable, whether you’re at home, at work, or on the go.
Paper by Fiftythree (free)
Five essential tools optimized for the creative process to sketch, write, draw, outline and colour. Start with draw and purchase additional tools from the in-app store. http://www.fiftythree.com/paper
7notes HD Premium ($9.90)
7notes HD Premium is a smart writing tool optimised for iPad. With this app, mixing your handwriting with digital texts is easier than ever before. It also converts handwriting to text. Try out the free version first (conversion functionality in premium version only).
Haiku Deck (free)
A simple way to create stunning presentations – whether you are pitching an idea, teaching a lesson, telling a story, or igniting a movement, it's fast, fun and simple for anyone to use. Finds high quality Creative Commons licensed images to incorporate directly. http://www.haikudeck.com

Printing

At this stage in time, printing from iPad devices is not supported by the University networks. Eventually the staff and students will be able to print on campus printers but this service will not be available for this pilot. When printing becomes available, the process will likely be similar to the current way we link to a specific printer. This usually involves an email to Campus Graphics (n.jorgensen@latrobe.edu.au) that includes your details, department cost centre fund and what device (Printer/copier) you intend to use from your iPad. If it is a Campus Graphics device, it should have a square sticker with bold red or black numerical digits.
If you do have access to a printer on a network that supports "AirPrint", Apple's protocol for printing from iPads wirelessly, you may try the following steps to print from you iPad browser.
  1. Open Safari and go to a webpage
  2. Click the more button >
  3. Select Print
  4. Press the "Select Printer" option and choose the printer
  5. Press print.
Alternatively, you can simply email the document that you wish to print to yourself and print it from your PC or Mac

  1. I can recommend the Tardus iPad-mini cover&stand @ $29.95 at OfficeWorks. It comes in black and red. It is recommended not only as a cover and stand, but also a means of holding that elusive stylus. Yes, elastic-band technology saves the day!

  2. Thanks Linda, sounds good- and affordable! I can also recommend the Gecko cover and stand, which also has a pocket for the stylus, although RRP is about $50AUD.
